Roy was born August 11, 1913, to Walton Knox Fitts and Effie Lee Cargile Fitts at Groesbeck. He grew up working on the farm, and continued farming cotton and corn after he was out of school. One day in the cotton field, he met a pretty young girl of 16, who soon became his wife. Roy was united in marriage with Julie Florence Fitts on November 11, 1937 at Groesbeck. They worked together farming around the Prairie Point area until the farming business eventually converted to raising cattle. Roy was a rancher and a real old-time cowboy, as well as a horseshoer. He traveled all over the county many years to shoe horses. Roy worked a number of years at the Mexia State School, as well as his ranching and horse work, until he retired. He loved horses, and rodeos and ropings. He rode his horse in the Groesbeck Homecoming Parade every year as long as he was able to sit on a horse, and many years led the parade carrying the flag. Roy was a member and deacon of the Prairie Point Baptist Church, and later member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Groesbeck. He was a loving husband and father and grandfather, and had many friends with whom he always enjoyed visiting and talking. He had been a resident at the Groesbeck LTC for the past 3 years. Roy was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Joe Earl Fitts, who died at age 17 in a tragic automobile accident in 1959; his sister, Mae Alice Walker; two brothers, John Knox Fitts and Herman Fitts; and his beloved wife of 72-1/2 years, Julie Florence Fitts, in 2010. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Patsy Ruth and Dr. Delma P. Posey of Temple; grandson, Daniel P. Posey and his wife, Maria of Temple; grandson, Patrick J. Posey and his wife, Susan of Waco; granddaughter, Julie Posey Hall and her husband, Gregg Hall of Temple; four great granddaughters, Ashely Posey of Waco, Molly Cooke of Temple, Emily Posey of Waco, and Anna Posey of Waco; three great grandsons, Mason Cooke of Temple, Andrew Posey of Temple, and Marshall Hall of Temple; and a brother, James Earl Fitts of Waco, niece Johnnie Marie Wilson and husband Dale Wilson of Groesbeck; nephew, Billy Fitts and wife Margaret Fitts of Mexia; and many other nieces and nephews. Memorials for Mr. Fitts may be made to the First Baptist Church, 306 N. Ellis St, Groesbeck, TX 76642.
