Aaron "Pete" Isaiah Shields

Aaron Isaiah "Pete" Shields passed away Sunday, July 10, 2011 at Beaumont, at age 92. Visitation will be Monday, July 11, 2011, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Groesbeck Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Bill Sutton officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Parker Memorial Park. Pete was born August 3, 1918 to Isaiah (Ide) Shields and Nola Blanche McKenzie Shields at Oletha. He grew up and attended school at Oletha and graduated high school in Jewett. He attended Jacksonville Baptist College and Lon Morris Methodist College in Jacksonville and started teaching for awhile at Oletha and Shiloh. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Army from November 27, 1942 through December 10, 1945, with 33 months spent in the Pacific. Pete was united in marriage with Dorothy "Dot" Richardson on May 18, 1946 at Mexia. He then completed his education, graduating from Stephen F. Austin College in Nacogdoches with a Bachelors and a Masters degree in education. The family lived in Port Neches where he was employed with the Port Neches Groves I.S.D., and taught sixth grade math. After thirty-three years teaching, he retired in 1980. When he retired, he and Dot moved back to Thornton, and then moved back to Nederland around 1999, where he lived the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Texas State Teachers Retirement Association and the American Legion in Groesbeck. Pete was a member of the Central Baptist Church at Port Neches, and a member at the Thornton Baptist Church while living there. He was a family oriented man, and his family was his number one priority. Mr. Shields was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy in 2003; and siblings, Troy Shields, Syble Shields, Pearl Shields, Lee Roy Shields, Claude Shields, Preston Shields, Jake Shields, and Mayron Shields. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda Kay and Joel Woodward of Lumberton; a son and daughter-in-law, Marcus Aaron and Patricia Shields of Florence; grandchildren, Eric Joel Woodward and wife Leslie of Lumberton, Erin Rae Burnette and husband Dallas of Vidor, Robert Dusty Stokes of Florence, Samuel Clayton Hobbs and wife Jennifer of Jarrell, and Patricia Rachel Giddings and husband Steven of Pflugerville; and great-grandchildren, Hunter, Gabby, Faith, Blake, Keaton, Kayla, and Bryley; and many nieces and nephews.
