Cathie Bell (Jones) Maddox, who formerly lived in Kosse, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2015, in New Braunfels, at age 99. Visitation will begin at 1:00 P.M, prior to the funeral services, on Thursday, January 8, 2015, in the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 P.M., with her son-in-law, Jimmy Adams officiating. Burial will follow in the Kosse City Cemetery. Pallbearer will be Van Adams, Martin Adams, Jakob Adams, Elijah Adams, Alec Herskowitz, and Aidan Herskowitz. Cathie was born August 28, 1915 to Delmer Jones and Artie Murphey Jones in Marquez, TX. The family moved to Lyford in the Rio Grande Valley, where she finished high school and attended Texas A&I College. After she married W. E. Maddox in 1933, the couple moved to Houston, where Cathie was a skilled homemaker, devoting her time to her son and three daughters. In Houston, she was active in both the North Houston and West 34th. Street churches of Christ. As a child, Cathie grew up in a home where her mother told or read stories to the children after the evening meal, and her dad often played the guitar for them to sing along. The songs and stories of her childhood were passed along to her children, and story-telling was a routine part of their childhood. Cathie was very creative and used her talents to sew for the children and herself. A favorite memory of the daughters were their trips to Foley’s in downtown Houston, to look over the clothes before school, and have a hamburger in the Foley’s cafeteria. At home, Cathie drew out the patterns of clothes they liked and made them herself. There are also wonderful childhood memories of family gatherings with trips to the valley and with their Maddox family in Houston, all of which included lots of food, talking, laughing and playing dominoes. Cathie enjoyed games and retained her skills up until the last few years, playing and winning at Scrabble and dominoes several times a week. After retirement, Cathie and W.E. moved back to central Texas, and they enjoyed twenty years with family and friends while living in Kosse. She enjoyed painting lessons and quilting with her friends, making sure each grandchild had their own special quilt. After W.E.’s death, Cathie moved to the New Braunfels area to be near her daughters. All her life, her children and grandchildren were very important to her. Cathie was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Jones; 2 brothers, Delmer and Hulen and two sisters, Fay and Grace; her husband of 64 years, W. E. Maddox; her son, Martin Ellis Maddox; a daughter, LaDena Ann Reading; and a grandson, Fred Mark Roberts. She is survived by her daughter, Dennice Roberts of Wimberly, and daughter and son-in-law, Janeil and Jimmy Adams of Canyon Lake; four grandchildren and their spouses: Robin and Steve Herskowitz of Austin, Van and Tracey Adams of Houston, Martin and Elena Adams of Bryan, and Patrick and Hanan Reading of Marietta, GA. There are nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Bea Nyquist; and three sisters-in-law, Veta Maddox of Groesbeck, Annabelle Jones and Marcella Jones, and numerous nieces and nephews.
