Chresteen Avant Uloth, of Groesbeck, passed away at home on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at age 94. Visitation will be Friday, July 10, 2015, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. in the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 11, 2015 in the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs. Ginger Fritz will be the vocalist and Mrs. Mary Belle Leach will be the pianist. Pallbearers will be Bubba Foley, Jerry Joe Pelton, Narvis Roddy, Rickey Compte, Dan Ramsey, and Cody Rogers. Chresteen was born January 11, 1921 to Wiley Avant, Sr. and Cevilla (Roark) Avant in Thornton, the oldest of eight children. She grew up around the Oletha, Red Hill and Thornton areas and was a member of the Church of Christ. When she was old enough, she left the country to move to the big city of Houston. Chresteen was living in Houston when she met Jack Uloth, and they were united in marriage. She had no children of her own, but nevertheless had two children to love and who loved her. She adopted her nephew, Robert Hargraves when he was seven months old. Her niece, Honey Beck lived with her from 6 months old until she started school due to her father’s illness during that time. Chresteen, Jack, and Robert moved from Houston to Waco in 1966, and added Honey to their home, and then the family moved to Groesbeck in 1969. During her life, Chresteen worked many jobs in which she served or took care of others. She worked at the Mexia State School and at the Holmes’ Nursing Home, and also at the White Way Café and for the Beck’s at the Hi Way Café. She enjoyed sewing and making clothes and quilts. She loved working in her yard, until Honey took away her weed eater and mower a few years ago. She had always canned any produce available to her each summer, and even last year kept Honey up until late at night making pickles. She also loved to go check the cows with Wesley. Chresteen added another loved one to her life when she met Ashley Martin at the bank a few years ago. Ashley visited her every day, and they went everywhere together, as if she was her own granddaughter. She was Granny Chres to Robert and Honey’s children, whom she loved and considered to be her own grandchildren. Chresteen was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers and three sisters: Lois Hargraves, Lewis Avant, Mildred Crowson, Dorothy Beck, and James Avant; and her husband, Jack Uloth in 2010. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Wiley and Hurley Avant, Jr. of Hawaii; brother and sister-in-law, Billy Wade and Phyliss Avant of Waco; nephew-son, Robert Hargraves and his wife, Santuza of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; niece-daughter, Honey Suttle and her husband Wesley of Kosse; grandchildren: Justin and Katie Hargraves of Baytown, Aleshia Kreder of Baytown, Tray Kreder of Kosse, and Lacy Kreder of Thornton; and great grandchild, Logan Hargraves of Baytown.
