Cornelia Hammond

Cornelia (Dossey) Hammond, of Houston, passed away Sunday, February 8, 2009, at Baytown, at age 89. Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 10, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside Services for Mrs. Hammond are scheduled for 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at the Thornton Cemetery. Mrs. Hammond was born January 7, 1920 to James Morgan Dossey and Addie Mae (Mills) Dossey at Farrar. She grew up near Groesbeck in the Prairie Point community. Cornelia was united in marriage with J.W. Hammond in 1944 at Groesbeck, and they were married for 64 years. Cornelia loved to cook and to quilt, and loved her grandchilden and great-grandchildren. She was very musically inclined, and played the piano, guitar and harmonica, along with her family. The family will cherish their memories of her forever. Mrs. Hammond was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, Beverly Fern Hammond, a great-aunt, Dovie Mills, and her husband, J.W. Hammond in 2007. She is survived by a daughter, Carol Jean Sellers and husband Milton, of Crosby; a son, James Weldon Hammond and wife, Nadine, of Deer Park; seven grandchildren, Lesley McFarland and her husband Keith of Houston, Travis Schindler and his wife Veronica of San Antonio, Thomas Sellers of La Porte, Deana Young and her husband Brent of Houston, James Hammond Jr. of Houston, Nathan Hammond of Houston and Matthew Hammond of Houston; and six great-grandchildren, Taylor McFarland, Ryan McFarland, Carlos Betencourt, Caleb Schindler, Adam James Young, and Avery Young.
