Matthew "Matt" Wayne Sledge

January 5, 1960 — October 31, 2015

Matt Wayne Sledge, lately of Teague, died unexpectedly on Saturday, October 31, 2015, at the age of 55, in Corsicana, TX. Matt was born in Dallas on January 5, 1960 to the late Sue Ellen (Sledge) Harten, who passed away just days after Matt. He attended Groesbeck High School until 1978, when he left school to join the United States Marine Corps. After leaving the service, Matt worked all over the country in the security industry, primarily as a body-guard or event security. Matt was born in the big city, but got to the country as quickly as he could. He enjoyed all aspects of country life, and enjoyed any and every physical activity. Matt had a huge heart, and was considered a "gentle giant" by those he loved. In his work life, though, he never saw a fight too big to walk away from. His adventurous life eventually took a toll on his body, but his spirit was unquenched. Matt gave his heart to Jesus and was baptized in a Pentecostal church in Alexandria, Louisiana. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him. Matt is survived by his children, Christina Comeau, Alicia Eggermont, and Tristan Sledge; three grandchildren; a brother, Timothy Harten; a sister, Leah Harten; his aunt, Edna Slaughter, and cousin Cindy Cargile. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elija and Sue Sledge, and his daughter, Megan Sledge. His burial in Fort Parker Cemetery will be announced on this site when arrangements are completed. Flowers, donations, and condolences may be offered at Groesbeck Funeral Home.
