Mellie Elizabeth Sanders

Mellie Elizabeth Sanders, of Groesbeck, passed away on Monday, July 13, 2009, at the Limestone Medical Center, at age 97. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 14, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Groesbeck Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend J. R. Tapley officiating. Burial will follow at Faulkenberry Cemetery. Mrs. Sanders was born on February 8, 1912 to Lewis Parker and Hilie Dillard Parker in Coldsprings, TX. She was raised and attended school in the Criswell community near Marlin. She was married to Shelby Sanders on September 14, 1932, at Marlin. They later moved to Houston, and lived there until moving back to Groesbeck in 1984. Mellie was a devoted caretaker for her son, Dwaine, after he contracted polio as a child, caring for him in their home as long as her health permitted. She loved gardening and had a green thumb; she was a wonderful cook and enjoyed cooking for her family and celebrating big holidays. She doted on her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of the Lost Prairie Baptist Church. Mrs. Sanders was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Shelby, and her six brothers. She is survived by a daughter, Charlotte Spielberg of Groesbeck; a son, Dwaine Sanders of Groesbeck; granddaughters, Celeste Dunn of Groesbeck and Catherine Tobola and her husband Dwayne of Elm Mott; grandson, Steven Spielberg of Waco; great grandchildren, Halie Hall of Groesbeck, Caitlyn Tobola of Elm Mott, Brittany Dunn of Waco, and Brandon Dunn of Waco; and many nieces and nephews.
