Veta Renn Maddox

August 15, 1922 — February 22, 2017

Veta Renn (Rogers) Maddox, passed away at Providence Health Center in Waco on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at age 94. Visitation will be Sunday, February 26, 2017, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Groesbeck Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, February 27, 2017, in the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel, with Brother Richard Williams of the Church of Christ of Groesbeck officiating. Burial will follow in the Kosse City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be James Grady Maddox, Glenn Cole Maddox, Austin Ford, John Rogers, Dennis Dearing, and Kris Shiflett. Veta was born August 15, 1922 to General Muton Rogers and Sadie Carolyn (Matthews) Rogers at Personville. Veta was united in marriage with Jimmie Carl Maddox on October 18, 1940 at the Courthouse in Groesbeck. After Jim was discharged at the end of World War II, they moved to Houston where they raised their sons. She worked a few years at Foleys, and she had many friends she enjoyed meeting for coffee and visiting in each other’s homes. She was a member of the West 34th. Street Church of Christ. Veda and Jim bought land near Kosse and moved there in 1970. They continued their friendships with many of their friends and relatives who also moved from Houston to Limestone County, as well many new friends. After Jim passed away on July 15, 1990, Veta moved to Groesbeck, where she maintained her home the rest of her life. She was a devoted member of the Church of Christ of Groesbeck, always in worship service unless prevented by illness or injury per a period of time, but back in services as soon as able, even while using a walker. She has left an empty pew and empty place in the hearts of her fellow Christians who enjoyed her bright and perky smile and encouraging example. Veta was an avid reader, enjoyed baking pies which she shared at church fellowships and with her friends and family, and she dearly loved all of her family. She talked with her son Glenn daily, even laughing with him the morning before her tragic fall on Wednesday afternoon. She loved the Maddox and Rogers’ family get-togethers while her and Jim’s siblings were still alive, and enjoyed each and every minute that her children and grandchildren could spend with her. One very special occasion was the "vintage" 90th. birthday party in which guests wore vintage hats and clothing and celebrated her life with cake and laughter. In spite of losses of family and periods of her own health problems, Veta always remained a joy to be with. Veta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 49 years, Jim Maddox; and all but one of her siblings, as well as her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James Weldon “Jimmy” and Cheryl Griffis Maddox of Sugar Land; son and daughter-in-law, Glenn Howard and Ann Falco Maddox of Thornton; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Chauncy and Austin Ford of Austin and great granddaughter, Ila Renn Ford of Austin; grandson, James Grady Maddox of Waco; grandson, Glenn Cole Maddox of Waco; and granddaughter, Lena Maryann Maddox of Groesbeck; her brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Benita Rogers of Conroe; and many nieces and nephews.
