Hattie Mae Lewis, of Groesbeck, was taken to be with her Lord, as the result of a tragic automobile accident, on Friday, October 8, 2010. She was 92. Visitation will be Sunday, October 17, 2010 at the Groesbeck Funeral Home, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, October 18, 2010, at the Lost Prairie Baptist Church, with Rev. J. R. Tapley officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston. Her nephews will serve as pallbearers. Hattie was born on October 26, 1917, to Eddie Lee Wornell and Winnie Mae Scott Wornell at Fairfield, Texas. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pan-American College in Edinburg, TX. on August 23, 1959. Miss Hattie spent the next thirty years as a third grade teacher, and loved working with the young children. She spent over twenty years teaching in San Benito, and also taught in Houston, and then in Palestine for quite a few years. She lived in Oakwood during some of the time she was teaching in Palestine. Miss Hattie was united in marriage with Carl Edmond Lewis eleven years ago, on September 16, 1999, after they met through mutual friends. They lived in Groesbeck where they had residences in town and also in the rural area, which she especially loved. They worshiped at Lost Prairie Baptist Church where she was an active and beloved member. She was instrumental in starting a library at the Lost Prairie Church which was named the Hattie Lewis Library, and her large personal library is being donated to this. Miss Hattie was an avid artist, completing many oil paintings in her life. She was working on paintings for a showing scheduled for next March at an art gallery in Palestine. She was a wonderful cook, and loved sharing her special dishes with friends and neighbors and all the church dinners. Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, James Luther Yarborough; two brothers, J. N. (Bud) Wornell, and W. E. (Will) Warnell, Sr.; and a sister, Eddie Jean Bowersox. She is survived by her husband, Carl Edmond Lewis of Groesbeck; eight nephews and their wives, Ed and Merle Warnell of Katy, Jerry and Dee Warnell of Eaton Rapids, MI, Reverend Doyle and Bonnie Warnell of San Antonio, Gary and Cindy Warnell of East Lansing, MI, Rod and Sandra Bowersox of Moncks Corner, S.C., Rex and Suzanne Bowersox of Tucson, AZ, Nathan and Molly Wornell of Houston, and Mark and Debbie Wornell of Humble; and nieces, Rejeana Bowersox and husband Troy Spence of Phoenix, AZ, and Kathleen Campbell of Houston; her husband’s three daughters and their extended families, including Darryl and Ann Hatley of Groesbeck, and their children and grandchildren; Carlene and Bobby Rolison of Itasca and their children, and Linda Jennings of Springtown and her children; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
