Barbara Barron Stewart

December 29, 1940 — March 6, 2024

Groesbeck

Barbara Barron Stewart passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at the Groesbeck LTC Nursing Home, with her family by her side.

Barbara was born December 29, 1940, a late Christmas present for her parents, William Cannon Barron and Isabel Blackmon Barron.  She greatly enjoyed her years in Groesbeck and graduated from Groesbeck High School in 1959, having made lifelong friends.

After graduating, Barbara attended Southern Methodist University and graduated in 1963.  While at SMU, she pledged Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and was an active member during her years at SMU.   While participating in sorority and other activities, she also managed to be on the Dean’s list.    Following college, she taught at Bryan Adams High School in Dallas.

In 1968, Barbara married Larry Stewart.  They were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Amanda and Elizabeth.  Larry, an engineer, worked in the offshore oil industry.  First, they went to Mobile, Alabama, then to Houston and next overseas to Great Yarmouth, England and Peterhead, Scotland.   Eventually, they returned to Aransas Pass, Texas and finally back to Houston.

Barbara often told stories of their time in Peterhead, Scotland with two small children and trying to learn to live in a completely different culture and extreme weather conditions.  She often swore the frigid winds blowing off of the North Sea made even a blue norther in Texas seem like a balmy day.

In 1986, Larry retired from Brown and Root and Barbara was ready to come home to Groesbeck, having been gone almost 20 years.  Martha England suggested she join the Shakespeare Club, the Groesbeck Women’s Club, and the Garden Club, all of which she enjoyed as this enabled her to be reunited with old friends and make new friends.   Barbara loved to read and was on the Board of the Groesbeck Library.

During this time, two grandchildren were born, Cannon Stewart Myrick and Rebeca Barron Myrick, and they became the light of Barbara’s life.   Both children loved their frequent visits to Groesbeck.

Larry and Barbara were members of the First Methodist Church. Barbara greatly enjoyed her retirement in Groesbeck with Larry.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Larry Stewart of Groesbeck; two daughters, Amanda and Elizabeth; grandchildren, Cannon and Rebecca; and her brother, Mike Barron and wife Gillian; nieces and nephews; and all of Larry’s extended family.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, William Cannon Barron and Isabel Blackmon Barron and two brothers, Bill Barron and David Barron.

A Memorial/Reception for Barbara will be held at the Groesbeck Civic Center from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2024.  A private family graveside will be scheduled at a later date.

The family would like to thank Groesbeck LTC nurses for helping Barbara during her stay at the nursing home.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to Faulkenberry Cemetery, (P. O. Box 464, Groesbeck, TX  76642.)
