Charles (Chuck) was born March 23, 1934, to Howard and Ada (Rainer) Walker in Groesbeck, with three brothers and a sister.
It was the fall of 1951, when Chuck was a senior in high school, and left the family farm in Limestone County, Texas. When he left, he only had two pairs of jeans and four dollars in his pocket. He was only seventeen years old. This made it difficult to find a job. His only option was to lie about his age, so he could obtain a draft card showing he was eighteen. After getting the card, he was hired by the American Can Company. He worked for the can company until 1956 at which time he was accepted into the Houston Police Academy Class #14.
Chuck graduated in 1956 from the Houston Police Academy, then received a letter that he was to report to the U. S. Army. After sixteen weeks of basic and advanced training in Fort Hood, Texas, his division shipped out for Germany. He was in the third armed division. He was assigned as a squad leader in his company and was sent to the 7th Army Non-Commission Officer’s Academy in Munich, Germany. After graduating, he returned to his unit and continued his tour of duty. In 1958, he returned to the United States and to the Houston Police Department.
In 1967, he was promoted to the rank of Detective and was assigned to the Homicide Division and served for 6 years. He was then promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and was assigned to the Traffic Enforcement Division. His next promotion was in 1971. He was given the rank of Captain. His first assignment as Captain was the Night Command in the Radio Patrol Division out of the central station. He was then assigned to command the North Patrol Division. Five years later, he was transferred to the Northwest command where he retired from the Houston Police Department in 1979. After retiring he was employed by U.N.I. Oil Company as Corporate Director of Personnel and Security. Next was back to where it all began. He was moving to Groesbeck, Limestone County, Texas,
Shortly after moving back to Groesbeck, he accepted the position of Chief of Police with the Groesbeck Police Department. After seventeen years of being Chief of Police, he retired again in 1997. After retirement, he moved back to The Woodlands area near Houston.
Charles’ proudest achievements are that of his children. He leaves behind Mark and Trina, who have made him the proudest father. They have given him a son-in-law, Chris and daughter-in-law, Ofelia, and two grandbabies, Quentin and Madyssen. Chuck was married to Mark and Trina’s mother, Sarah Walker, who was a wonderful wife and mother. Before she fell asleep in death, they were married for fifty-three years.
Bettie Walker was married to Charles for seven years; and he leaves behind his current wife, Janice, who loved and cared for him during the last three years of his life
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Sarah Walker; son, Charles “Chuck”Sherman; sister, Ava Lee Black and her husband Weldon Black; brother, Howard Heston Walker; grandson, Quentin Cooper; and great nephew, TDPS Trooper Chad Walker.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Walker; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Ofelia Walker; daughter and son-in-law, Trina and Chris Turner; granddaughter, Madyssen Walker; two brothers and sisters-in-law and their families: Dennis and Barbara Walker of Groesbeck and James and Ann Walker of Tyler; and sister-in-law, Shirley Walker.
May the sweet and funny memories of Chuck warm all of the hearts of those who knew him.
