Claudis Mozelle Harris, of Groesbeck, passed away at Hillcrest Scott and White Hospital in Waco on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at age 83.
Visitation (“Come and Go” from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.) will be held at Groesbeck Funeral Home on Saturday, December 13, 2025.
Claudis was born April 18, 1942, to Audis Alonzo Henson and Maudie Mozelle (Jordan) Henson in Groesbeck. She graduated from Groesbeck High School in the Class of 1960.
Claudis was united in marriage with James Everett “Jamie” Harris on January 12, 1963, at her family’s home. Although they had known each other, their union was a result of the good friendship between her mother, Mrs. Mozell Henson and Jamie’s mother, Mrs. Lois Harris. While Jamie was serving in the Army, his mother asked her mother to ask Claudis to write letters to him. She wrote him many letters about what was going on in Groesbeck, and he kept on writing her back. As soon as he was honorably discharged and returned home, they were a couple, or as Mrs. Harris said, they were “twitterpated” (fascinated with each other.) And this remained during the next 62 years of marriage.
They lived in Mexia, then Madisonville, then Austin, before returning to make their home in Limestone County, and have lived at Twin Bridges for many years. Claudis worked at Vogel’s Sewing Factory, then bookkeeping at Campbell’s Lumber Company, then at the Groesbeck Hospital in the office and pharmacy, and lastly as a nursing assistant at Susan Bond’s Clinic.
Claudis enjoyed sewing and quilting, from the piecing to the quilting, and made many quilts for the family and each grandchild, and also for the public. She also enjoyed crocheting and reading. She made wonderful pumpkin bread which everyone loved. She would feed the bees, and she raised a pet deer. Most important, Claudis was a wonderful mother, not only to her girls but to their friends and her nieces and nephews – they all called her Mama. She and Jamie were members of First Baptist Church of Groesbeck. Claudis was a peace maker, treating everyone with a kind word.
Claudis was preceded in death by her parents and a nephew, Jackey Dean Campbell.
She is survived by her husband, Jamie Harris; daughter and son-in-law, Tonda and Joey Owens of Groesbeck and daughter, Toni Harris of Thornton; grandchildren, Chance and Amber White of Louisville, MS, Jimmy Ward of Teague, Zachary and Rachel Curry of Riesel, and Jason Harris of Groesbeck; and great grandchildren, Aubrey White of Groesbeck and A. J. Curry of Riesel.
She is also survived by a sister, Judy Terry of Groesbeck and numerous nieces and nephews.
