Gary Loy Bertrand

July 8, 1937 — August 10, 2021

Gary Loy Bertrand, of Groesbeck (Lake Limestone), passed away at Parkview Regional Hospital in Mexia on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at age 84.

Gary was born on July 8, 1937, to Rodney Loy Bertrand and Vivian Irene (Killeen) Bertrand in Houston.   He grew up in Houston and graduated from Austin High School and then attended Sam Houston State University.

Gary served in the U.S. Navy, and although he never served on board a ship, he was stationed in Hawaii.

After receiving his honorable discharge, Gary worked for Brown and Root as a welder, until going to work at his parents’ restaurant in Houston as the manager.  He fell in love with one of the waitresses there, Glinda Raye Jackson.

Gary and Glinda were married on January 21, 1972, in Houston.   After working for a period at the restaurant, they opened their own business, a liquor store and small lounge, where they were both involved.   Then Gary started a trucking business, GLB Trucking, and continued trucking in Houston until he retired.

They bought property at Lake Limestone near Groesbeck in 1983 and spent weekends there working on the property.   In 2005 they moved to their home at the lake.   Gary loved bass and crappie fishing, and also deer hunting.   They enjoyed having their family come to the lake as often as they could.   Later in life Gary enjoyed watching old Westerns, especially John Wayne.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law, Johnny Clark and daughter-in-law, Ella Bertrand.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Glinda Bertrand; his son, Paul Bertrand of Houston; daughter and son-in-law, Cyndi and Ted Harrigan of Conroe; 6 grandchildren:  Joseph, Daniel, Tabatha, Taylor, Heaven and Timothy; 13 great grandchildren; his sister, Brenda Clark; and nieces and nephews.
