Glenn Steven “Steve” Rasco, of Thornton, passed away at Limestone Medical Center in Groesbeck on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at age 84.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at Thornton Cemetery, with Brother Richard Williams officiating and honors by the U.S. Navy.

A memorial service will be held on October 11 at 11 am at the Crestview Church of Christ in Waco, TX. Flowers for the memorial need to be delivered to the church by 11 am on Friday, October 10. Your thoughts and prayers are welcomed anytime.

Steve was born on November 10, 1940, to Richard Glenn Rasco and Ollie Mae (Stevens) Rasco in Groesbeck, Texas. He grew up spending most of his childhood in both the small town of Thornton, Texas and the big city of Houston. While enjoying both experiences, he always felt drawn to return to his country roots. He attended Groesbeck High School and Reagan High School in Houston.

Steve served in the U. S. Navy from 1958 through 1962, during a time between the Korean War and the start of the Vietnam War. He sailed on several ships, including the USS Roanoke and the USS Passumpsic. His deployments included the South China Sea, Guam, Japan and others locations. After his time in the navy, he continued to serve in the Reserves.

Steve was united in marriage with Sandra Elizabeth Segrest on November 18, 1958, in Richmond, TX. While he was still serving in the Navy in California, she joined him there for a period of time, and when he was honorably discharged, they made their home in Houston.

Steve’s career with the Houston Police Department began in 1963 where he worked at the North Shephard Branch as a patrolman. He eventually was stationed downtown as a Detective, and later retired with the rank of lieutenant in 1984.

Raising three busy boys in Houston meant that Steve often worked long hours “moonlighting” as an off-duty police officer in order to supplement his primary salary with the City. Despite being, no doubt chronically sleep-deprived, he always found time to attend the boys’ extra-curricular activities and events, as well as spending many weekends taking them to “the farm” which the family had purchased in Limestone County.

Steve and Sandra moved to their ranch outside of Thornton in 1984, thus fulfilling his lifetime dream of one day living “in the country”. While, likely somewhat less enthusiastic at first, Sandra also learned to love their new, small-town life, and they both became very active in the local community. Though he continued to work part-time security work in Houston for a time, his passion and identity was as a rancher.

For many years, Steve and Sandra were both members of the Groesbeck Church of Christ where they developed countless close friendships lasting for decades. Steve’s interests, in addition to farming and ranching, included spending time with family, reading, Civil War and military history, chess, board games with family, along with family football games. He also enjoyed long road trips with the family, especially to Civil War battle grounds (not the most exciting trip destinations for kids, however…)

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, and later, his wife Sandra Elizabeth Rasco in 2019.

He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Terry and Zoe Rascoe of Temple, son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Jamie Rascoe of Cypress, and son, Barron Rascoe of Thornton; grandchildren: Robin Scott and Rob Hammett of Austin, Blaise and Miss Katy Rascoe of Pearland, Olivia and Andy Cronin of Austin, Michael and Chelsea Rascoe of Hobson, David and Elaine Rascoe of Dallas, and Madelyn and Chad Hammock of Austin. His great grandchildren are: Bodhi Hammett of Austin,

Kieran Rascoe of Pearland, Jack Cronin of Austin, Grayson Rascoe of Hobson, and Ella Hammock of Austin. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Annette and Dave Stillwagon of Waco, sister-in-law, Sylvia Whatley of The Woodlands, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Note: some family members spell “Rasco” without the “e” and others with it. It’s a long story
