Jo Nettles Boyd

Jo (Nettles) Boyd, of Lake Limestone/Old Union, passed away at home after a short battle with cancer, on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at age 88.

Visitation will be held at Groesbeck Funeral Home on Friday, July 18, 2025, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Old Union Cemetery Pavilion, with her son-in-law, David Allen officiating.

Pallbearers will be Kelley Boyd, Tyler Allen, Jordan Ziemer, Jared Nettles, Michael Martin, and Greg Gonzales.

Honorary pallbearers will be David Greenhaw, Violet Jones, Everett Diamond, Scott Diamond, and David Robinson.

Jo was born in the Old Union Community on December 4, 1936, to Leslie Odel Nettles and Edith Raye (Thomason) Nettles. She grew up with a brother and 4 sisters on the family farm, where they all helped the family chopping cotton, picking cotton, gathering corn, raising the vegetables and canning for their winter food. Jo began school in Oletha, and then attended in Thornton, where the kids rode to school in a Jeep with hay for warmth in the winter. She transferred to Groesbeck when she was a Junior, and graduated in 1954.

Jo and Jean and all the girls in the community were baptized in the Church of Christ at the same time, at one of the summer revivals when they were young. They had to come to the church building in town for the baptism.  When Jo graduated, she moved to Dallas to live with her sister, Jean, and began work where Jean worked at Sears. She attended college at Eastfield in Mesquite for awhile.  Jo was introduced to Stanley on a blind date arranged by a friend from Sears.

Jo and Reginald Stanley Boyd were united in marriage on August 4, 1957, at the Church of Christ in Groesbeck, and made their home in Dallas where they raised two children.

After being home with her children for some years, Jo went back to work, at J. C. Penney in Dallas, where she became the executive secretary for the Vice President who was director of the tax office.

After Stanley and Jo retired, they moved to the Nettles family land at Lake Limestone, and built a house. She was involved in many Groesbeck and local community activities, such as volunteering at the Groesbeck Hospital, the Chamber of Commerce, the Old Union Cemetery Board and the Oletha Jamboree.

Jo enjoyed making crafts, including preserving and framing butterflies, gold leaf projects, and antiquing furniture. She also was a very good seamstress. She especially loved her yard and the multi-gardens she raised.

Stanley and Jo became very adept at Polka dancing, even to wearing the hat and boots with their dance costumes, and enjoyed being on Molly B’s Polka Party from Ennis. They also loved motoring around town with Stanley driving their little smart car, but Jo also loved Jeeps, having owned three different ones.

She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, and in the last few years had enjoyed bringing her great granddaughter, Violet to Sunday School in Groesbeck.

Jo was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Stanley Boyd in 2020; brother, Perry Nettles; and 3 sisters, Billie Ticknor, Martha Martin and Patricia Lincecum and brothers-in-law, Joe Lincecum, Tommy Ticknor, and Guy “Red” Martin; nephews, infant Scott Nettles, Wally Sherrod, Layne Martin and Wayne Martin; as well as many other relatives.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kelley and Melinda Boyd of Groesbeck; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and David Allen of Mesquite; grandchildren, Kaitlin Ziemer of Abilene, Tyler Allen of McKinney, Paige Green of Bogota; great grandchildren, Caleb Ziemer, Madilyn Ziemer, Brooks Allen, Wesley Allen, Gigi Green, True Green, David Greenhaw, and Violet Jones; and her dear sister, Jean Nettles of Groesbeck; and many nieces and nephews.
