Mayron Dean Herod (“Bill”), a naturally curious mind and lifelong avid reader, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026, after a battle with heart and breathing complications. He was 81 years old.
Bill was born on August 6, 1944, in Groesbeck, Texas, to Doris (“Bunk”) and Vada Herod. He grew up in Groesbeck and graduated from Groesbeck High School before continuing his education at Navarro College. Soon after, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy, an experience that shaped his strong work ethic and quiet sense of duty throughout his life.
Bill built a 40-year career in the oil and gas drilling industry, working in many roles but primarily as a mud logger, where he carefully monitored and analyzed drilling mud and rock cuttings. He was known for his keen attention to detail, steady nature, and deep knowledge of his work.
Outside of his career, Bill found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved reading, learning new things, and spending time with his family. He was the kind of person who could talk about almost any subject and was always eager to understand how things worked. His curiosity, humor, and quiet wisdom will be remembered by everyone who knew him.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and by Rita Kenyon, the love of his life.
He is survived by his daughter, Andrea Wilson of Thornton; his stepson, Eric Lundh of Thornton, Texas; his sister, Glynis Rosas and her husband Joseph Rosas of Groesbeck; his brother, David Herod of Mexia; along with grandchildren, extended family members and many friends who will miss him dearly.
A memorial service is being planned and will be announced.
