Shirley Ann Maxwell

Shirley Ann Maxwell, 87, of Pittsburg, Texas, and formerly of Groesbeck, passed away peacefully in Centerville on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Visitation and funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Central Baptist Church in Thornton. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Tracy Sims officiating. Burial will follow at Faulkenberry Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Adam Walker, Clay Harris, Matt Foreman, Harley Jones, Rip Jones, and Dallas Jones.

Shirley was born November 15, 1938, in Porum, Oklahoma, to Frank Presley Sherwood and Mertle Louise Whisenhunt. She grew up around Shamrock, Tx and attended school in Samnorwood, Tx.

Shirley married Vernon Wayne Maxwell on July 27, 1955. Together, they built a life centered around family, moving to five different towns during Vernon’s career with Lone Star Gas before settling in Groesbeck around 1976.

Shirley quickly became an active and loved member of the Groesbeck community. She quickly made friends and was very involved in Stephanie’s activities. She served as a room mother for 12 years, helping with everything from class parties, homecoming floats and decorating for prom.

She was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church in Thornton, where she especially enjoyed the ladies’ activities and shopping trips. She was also a member of the Groesbeck Women’s Club and once proudly opened her home for the community’s Christmas Tour.

Shirley had a special love for the holidays, especially Christmas. She loved decorating her home, creating a warm and welcoming place for her family, and bringing everyone together around the table. She was an excellent cook and will always be remembered for the wonderful meals she prepared, especially her meatloaf, soups, and dressing.

Shirley worked at Longbotham’s Furniture in Groesbeck and enjoyed staying active and social. She loved going dancing, watching movies, shopping, eating Mexican food, and making her daily trips to the grocery store and CVS. She also never missed her hair appointments—one of the many little routines that brought her joy.

For ten years, Shirley lovingly cared for her husband, Wayne, through his health complications until his passing. Later in life, she moved to Pittsburg to live near her daughter Sabrina, where she enjoyed the independence and comfort of having her own apartment.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernon Wayne Maxwell; her brothers, Harley Gene Sherwood, Robert Sherwood, and Ray Sherwood; and her sister, Alma Throckmorton.

She leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory: her daughter and son-in-law, Sabrina and Matt Foreman of Pittsburg; her daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Adam Walker of Hilltop Lakes; her granddaughter, Brandy, and her husband, Casey Turner, of Pittsburg; and her four grandsons, Clay and his wife, Constance Harris, of Gilmer; Harley and his wife, Tyler Jones, of Kosse; Rip Jones of Kosse; and Dallas Jones of Waco. She also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will forever cherish the memories they shared with her.

Shirley will be remembered for her love of family, her beautiful holiday spirit, her warm home, her wonderful cooking, and the many simple moments she made special. Above all, she loved having her family together, and the memories she created with them will live on for generations.
