Susan Carol Hughes

April 15, 1946 — November 26, 2021

On November 26, 2021, Susan Carol (Blackburn) Hughes peacefully passed away in her home on Lake Limestone, with her husband, son, daughter, and beloved dog, Gary by her side.

Susan was born on April 15, 1946 in Duluth, Minnesota to Kathleen “Kay” (Marino) and James Blackburn and was the oldest of six children. She married Alan on January 30, 1965 and had two children, Peter and Brynn. They got to Texas as fast as they could, moving to San Antonio in 1974, to Houston in 1980, and finally retiring to Lake Limestone in 2004.

Susan was active in the United Methodist Women and Cynthia Ann Garden Club, but her true passion was fulfilled when she realized there was a need in the community for after school care. She developed and facilitated two after school programs: Kool After School and Big Red, creating a loving and fun place for Groesbeck’s elementary age kids.

Susan was a dedicated Christian, spending many hours devoted to studying the Bible. Throughout the years, she participated in several Bible Study groups to fulfill her passion for learning. She was also an avid reader, music lover, talented photographer, and gifted artist.

She will be greatly missed by her husband, Alan, of Groesbeck, Texas; son Peter and his wife Brenda Hughes, of San Antonio, Texas; daughter Brynn and her husband Rick Ruiz, of Bryan, Texas; and grandchildren, Alyssa and Chris Queen, Ryan and Madi Ruiz, Eric Ruiz, Colin Hughes, Madeleine Hughes, Taryn Kate Ruiz, and Darragh Hughes; great-grandchildren Zoey and James Queen and Lila Ruiz; as well as by her five siblings, her brothers- and sisters-in-law, and numerous treasured friends and family.

A small Celebration of Life Service is being planned. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made in Susan’s name to Providence Hospice – Waco - https://www.chot.org/
