Virgil Thompson, 76, of Donie, Texas, passed away on April 21, 2026, after battling cancer.
Born November 27, 1949, to Luther Virgil and Norma Jean Thompson, he was preceded in death by his father, brothers Gary and Larry Thompson, and brother-in-law Hick Higginbotham of Grand Saline.
Virgil is survived by his sister Teresa Higginbotham, sons Corey and Jeremy Thompson, daughter Carrie Longenbaugh, girlfriend June Brown, grandchildren Jason Thompson, Brittany Lewis, Michael Longenbaugh, Hunter Longenbaugh, Jadelynn Sheridan, Easton Longenbaugh, Coen Longenbaugh, Emery Jane Thompson, Jasper Chaos Thompson, and Jaxon Mayhem Thompson, and great-grandchildren Jason Thompson Junior, Logan Lewis, and Maddyn Lewis.
He served in the Navy, attended classes at Texas University, and worked on drilling rigs across South Texas, western Louisiana, and East Texas until retiring in 2011.
When Carrie and Corey’s mother left in 1985, Virgil drove to New Hampshire, fought for his kids, and brought them home to Texas. Back then you didn’t need a lawyer — you just had to be willing to stand up and take them. He chose to be their dad, and he meant it.
Virgil enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life.
A private service will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
